My teaching philosophy
I strive to provide quality Irish traditional and Transatlantic folk music lessons on a range of instruments, by integrating a variety of teaching methods, activities and technology.
When it comes to music, we are all on a lifelong journey and appreciating where you are is as important as progressing with your goals. I see my role as helping my students to explore the vibrancy of this journey in ways that allow them to be curious, to find their individual voice, and to participate, perform and collaborate, much like many of our ancestors did.
In order to do that, I must help them build a good solid foundation, instill good habits from the beginning, and create the conditions to allow them to grow.
Above all, I want them to love what they do.
Details
I offer 30-minute and 60-minute lessons, which can be scheduled as one-offs, or bundled to save money and to increase personal accountability.
A 15-minute Zoom chat is included with the 4-week lesson Bundle.
My main instruments are the acoustic guitar and the mandolin, but I am a multi-instrumentalist and have taught solid music technique, and music theory on countless instruments with great success.
I am currently teaching in the evening here in Ireland (GMT) and at noon/lunch time in the United States (EST). Please get in contact to see if there is an alternative time that may suit both of us.
I love to teach both children and adults and have developed a variety of methods to ensure my students are comfortable, looked after and that they understand and enjoy their progression.
Please make contact if interested in receiving a ‘Policy Document’ and ‘Registration Form’. The current rates are included in the return email.
Testimonials
Conan Kilcoyne is an amazing music teacher. He has been teaching my son the Irish whistle all the way from Ireland during quarantine! One silver lining to COVID is being able to connect with amazing people over zoom!
Check him out as he teaches a variety of instruments and is incredibly knowledgeable!

Conan is my daughter's teacher for the Irish tin whistle. She has made so much progress in a short time and enjoys her lessons. He teaches all ages. He also teaches guitar, mandolin, banjo and bodhrán (Irish drum). He also builds instruments from scratch. He is a truly excellent teacher - well prepared, enthusiastic, encouraging and so very talented.
While he lives in Ireland, we are able to have very successful lessons over zoom. Check him out if you're looking to learn!

When our son Luke first met Conan he was a little bit nervous as he had been for guitar lessons before but he felt that he could not progress any further as his teacher kept repeating the same lessons over and over. That soon changed. He really enjoyed his time with Conan and looked forward to each Monday evenings lessons. Once Conan figured out his level he knew what was needed to take the next step for progression. Sometimes these steps would be harder than others but would be beneficial in the long term.
Luke has gone from being a shy person who kept his guitar playing to himself to becoming a confident performer who after only a few months of lessons with Conan, has played guitar for his school graduation service, played in his new school twice for audiences, played at a charity concert and played a couple of times alongside his mentor. Conan has also progressed him onto other musical instruments such as the mandolin, banjo, djembe and cajon.
Conan's method of praise and encouragement is a brilliant way of learning and we would highly recommend him to anybody, young or old who is thinking of picking up an instrument. He has transformed Luke's passion for music and he has not looked back since. Luke has made a friend for life with Conan, He always comes home happy after his lessons and loves to show us what he has learned.
